Patchouli is a plant native to Indonesia whose leaves, when distilled, produce an essence with a woody, damp, and earthy scent, slightly camphoraceous, similar to cocoa. Its aroma reached Europe via trunks filled with shawls from India; since patchouli has insecticidal properties, it was wrapped around precious fabrics to protect them from moths. American hippies popularized it in the 1970s for its supposed aphrodisiac properties.
